Ex.1 Translate the text without dictionary and find the international words. How do tornadoes start?, There are certain kinds of storms that may cover thousands of square miles. One such type is called a “cyclone”. A tornado is a special kind of cyclone. A tornado arises when the conditions that cause ordinary thunderstorms are usually violent. There is an updraft of air. There are winds blowing in opposite directions around this rising air. This starts a whirling effect that is narrow and very violent. When this happens, centrifugal force throws the air away from the centre. And this leaves a core of low pressure at the centre. This low pressure core acts like a powerful vacuum on everything it passes. This is one of the destructive things about a tornado. It can actually suck the walls of the house outward in such a way that the house will collapse. The other destructive thing about a tornado is high winds that may blow around the edges of a whirl. These winds can reach 300 miles per hour and blow anything down. Ex. 2 Read the text without the dictionary and say what the main problem is. People everywhere have become aware of a new kind of pollution – noise pollution. The problem has been brought into sharp focus by the discovery that many teenagers have suffered permanent hearing loss following long exposures to amplified rock music, and by public concern about the effects of sonic booms that would be caused by supersonic transports (SST) if they were put into commercial service. Noise is usually measured in decibels. A tenfold increase in the strength of a sound adds 10 units on the decibel scale, a 100-fold increase adds 20. The human threshold of hearing is represented by zero decibels. Even a brief exposure to intense noise can cause temporary loss of hearing acuity. Permanent loss of hearing follows chronic exposure to high noise levels. Noise levels as low as 50-55 decibels may delay or interfere with sleep and result in a feeling of fatigue on awakening. There has been growing evidence that noise in the 90-decibel range may cause irreversible changes in the nervous system. These forms of damage, including permanent hearing loss such as that suffered by fans of rock music, can occur at noise levels well below those that are painful. Noise may be a factor in many stress-related diseases, such as peptic ulcer and hypertension, although present evidence is only circumstantial. Багатозначність слів ( Polysemy) Багатозначність – наявність декількох лексичних значень у одного слова. Багатозначність характерна для будь-якої мови і в значній мірі для англійської мови. При перекладі багатозначних слів виникають труднощі, тому підібрати необхідне значення слова можна тільки на основі контексту. Правила вибору значення іменника, прикметника, дієслова-присудка Правильний і швидкий вибір значення слова і переклад за здогадкою потребують уміння виділити в реченні ті елементи. Які є основними для перекладу даного слова. Вибір значення іменника При перекладі іменника, який має декілька значень, необхідно, перш за все. Враховувати значення його правого означення. Порівняйте: the advance of science - прогрес науки; the advance of an army - наступ армії Очевидно, що праве означення, виражене іменником science – наука і army - армія, визначило переклад слова advance в першому випадку як прогрес, а в другому як наступ. Контекст іноді дає можливість визначити значення незнайомого іменника без словника, на основі значення правого визначення і загального змісту речення: The launching of the first earth satellite was a great victory of the scientists. Запуск першого штучного супутника Землі був великою перемогою вчених. Безсумнівну, що переклад незнайомого слова launching не викликав сумнівів, тому що праве визначення « першого штучного супутника» і далі « був великою перемогою вчених» дає всі підстави для перекладу слова launching як запуск. Вибір значення прикметника При перекладі прикметника на українську мову, необхідно враховувати значення іменника, до якого цей іменник відноситься. Порівняйте: close contact - тісний контакт; close battle - ближній бій; close air - сперте (задушливе) повітря. Із прикладів видно, що значення прикметника повністю залежить від значення іменників: contact - контакт, battle - бій, air - повітря. Вибір значення дієслова-присудка 1.При виборі значення перехідного дієслова ( дієслово, яке має прямий додаток) слід, в першу чергу, враховувати значення прямого додатка. Порівняйте: to launch a rocket - запустити ракету; to launch a ship - спустити судно на воду; to launch an attack - розпочати наступ; to launch a blow- нанести удар. Приклади показують, що переклад дієслова launch повністю визначається значенням іменника – прямого додатка: rocket - ракета, ship - судно, attack - наступ, blow - удар. При перекладі речення, де невідомі дієслово-присудок і прямий додаток. Необхідно спочатку знайти в словнику значення прямого додатку, а потім. Знаючи значення прямого додатку. Вибрати значення дієслова-присудка. Automated line accomplishes the task more effectively. Автоматизована лінія виконує цю задачу біль ефективно. Якщо в даному реченні незнайомі слова accomplishes the task - то спочатку визначаємо значення слова task - задача, а потім перекладаємо слово accomplishes - виконувати. Вибір значення перехідного дієслова в деяких випадках визначається не тільки значенням прямого додатка, але і значенням підмета. Наприклад, дієслово hold має такі основні значення: тримати, вміщувати, додержуватися та ін. This room holds 20 men.. В цьому реченні вибір значення « вміщувати» визначається як значенням прямого додатка ( 20 людей) , так і значенням підмета (кімната). Ця кімната вміщує 20 людей. 2. При виборі значення неперехідного дієслова необхідно, перш за все, звернути увагу на значення підмета. Порівняйте: a radio wave travels - радіохвиля розповсюджується; an airplane travels - літак летить; a man travels - людина подорожує. Як показують приклади, вибір значення дієслова повністю визначається значенням підмета. Переклад неперехідного дієслова можна також визначити непрямим додатком. В цих випадках необхідно звернути увагу на прийменник; який поєднує дієслово з додатком. Багато перехідних дієслів мають різні значення в залежності від прийменника. Наприклад: to look at a person - дивитися на людину; to look for a person - шукати людину; to look through papers - переглядати папери. Звичайно в словниках вказується вживання дієслова з прийменником. При перекладі дієслово-присудок в пасивному стані необхідно враховувати змістовний зв'язок дієслова-присудка з підметом: rockets are launched - ракети запускаються; ships are launched - судна спускаються на воду. З цього видно, що різний переклад дієслова-присудка are launched визначається підметом. Ex.2 Put 10 questions to the text and translate it. ' Solar system Our Sun and Earth, our Moon and the planets, meteors and comets belong to the "family of the Sun" which we call our "solar system". Our solar system includes of nine planets and their moons. The closest planet to the sun is Mercury. No other planet receives more light and heat that this one. It is a smallest of the planets. Mercury revolves around the Sun at a higher rate of speed than other planets. Its speed is much higher than theirs. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system: Venus is not so large as Jupiter, but it is the brightest planet in the sky. We see its quiet light in the morning as well as in the evening. When it is in the West it is the first point of light which we see in the evening. We see it best of all on a dark night. The darker night grows the brighter it shines and the better we see it. When Venus appears in the Fast it is possible to see it in the early morning hours as well. Ex.3 Translate the following sentences, pay attention to the polysemantic meanings of words in bold type. 1. Ex.4 Translate the following sentences, pay attention to the words in bold type: 1. The use of light metals in industry will amount to a higher and higher per cent. 2. There is a great amount of titanium in the Urals. 3. A square thing does not fit into a round hole. 4. The Earth round once in one day and one night. 5. There is a bus stop round the corner. 6. In order to come to the station you must round the corner. 7. The Earth makes its yearly round in 365 or 366 days. Ex.5 Translate the following sentences, pay attention to the words in bold type: 1. Television is. an important means of communication-2. This fact means that the number of radio stations in our country will increase. 3. All technical means will be perfect in future. 4. A number is modern houses will be constructed in this region 5.The instrument cabin of a spaceship houses various transmitters, power sources and other equipments. 6: This system houses all technological and auxiliary services. 7. The obtained result is of great practical importance for the development of these systems. 8. The application of powerful outer space relays result in better communication. 9. Engineers achieved great results in constructing semiconductor devices. 10. The application of semiconductor devices results in better operation of this equipment. 11. The total number of power stations in the world is growing constantly. 12. All the devices of this laboratory total about two hundred Ex.6 Translate the following sentences, pay attention to the word "provide" (забезпечувати, поставляти} as the verb and "provided" (за умови, якщо тільки) as the conjunction. 1. Solar batteries provided much energy for this system operation; 2. A sell supplies electric energy provided its electrodes are different materials. 3. The electrical properties of germanium may be changed provided germanium is exposed to light. 4. A capacitor stores electric energy provided that a voltage source is applied to it 5. These experiments provided necessary data for studying this phenomenon. 6. Provided the laboratory is equipped with up-to-date instruments we shall be able to carry out the important scientific researches. 7. A direct current flows provided a direct voltage source is applied; to the circuit. Ex.7 Translate the following sentences into Ukrainian, pay attention to the meaning word in bold type, 1. Work is measured by the product of the moving force times the distance through which the force acts in overcoming the resistance. 2. It is best to have the value of an alternating current or varying voltage with time according to the sine wave. 3. The word "phase”, when property used in a.c. terminology, refers to time. 4. The experiment was repeated many times, and the temperature conditions varied slightly. 5. We could study the reaction mentioned above very thoroughly because it lasted over a long time. 7. Large turbines have an economy of three or four times that of steam units in a small plant 8. Переклад вільних і сталих словосполучень Однією з особливостей словникового складу будь-якої мови є здатність утворювати різні сполучення. Ті сполучення, які постійно вживаються як готові стереотипи, називаються сталими, а ті , які можуть постійно змінюватися , називаються вільними. Деякі приклади перекладу вільних і сталих словосполучень.
Часто англійські та українські фрази повністю співпадають – семантично. Стилістично. Що значно полегшує переклад тексту: the essence of the matter - сутність питання, in a word - одним словом, control work - контрольна робота. Отже переклад сталих виразів викликає певну складність. Виділяється декілька способів перекладу сталих виразів на українську мову. метод підбору еквівалентів полягає в тому,що при перекладі підбираємо єдиний можливий еквівалент: Starting moment - пусковий момент; Cathodes protection - катодний захист. cталі вирази можуть перекладатися вибірково, тобто переклад сталих виразів за допомогою одного з можливих синонімічних виразів. Вибір синоніма залежить від характеру словосполучення і контексту: Electronic scanning - електронне сканування, електрона розгортка, аналіз з електроно-проміневої розгортки; Concurrent programming - паралельне програмування, збіжне програмування За відсутністю еквівалента для сталого англійського виразу можна використати метод вільного перекладу. Існують два типи вільного перекладу. калькування – дослівний переклад, коли зберігаються семантичні та стилістичні риси оригіналу. Калькування використовується тоді, коли в українській мові відсутня еквівалентна лексична одиниця, наприклад: hip-hop - хіп-хоп; street people - вуличні люди (бездомні) описувальний переклад – розкриття значення (поняття) за допомогою опису, наприклад:standard performance - рівень продуктивності робочого, необхідний для виконання завдання за час, встановлене за нормою; flexible transport - транспортування (нафтопродуктів) по гнучкому трубопроводу, транспортування в м’якій тарі. Дуже важливо відрізнити вільне словосполучення відсталого (фразеологічного)виразу, спираючись на контекст і загальну логіку висловлювання. Приклади деяких сталих виразів (словосполучень): Take it or leave it - як бажаєте, як треба Hold your horses - не поспішай! Hold your tongue - притримай язик (розм.) It goes without saying - цілком очевидно It doesn’t matter - неважно, не має значення In good time - всьому свій час Joy go with you - бажаю щастя Out of the question - цілком виключено Be my quest - роби, що хочеш Please yourself - поводься, як хочеш (розм..) |
