Topic: At the hotel #1

Type of lesson: language focus lesson

Lesson objectives:

Learning objectives: to enrich the vocabulary of the pupils, to train pupils in reading dialogues and making their own ones, to teach pupils to fill in the forms, to master their abilities of oral translating the text

Developing and educational objectives: to teach pupils abilities to work in groups and pairs, to teach them to be polite and obey the rules, to develop their feeling of language, to widen their horizons

Lesson equipment: cards with new words, pictures of the hotels’ interior, pupils’ textbooks

Lesson procedure:

1.Warming-up

Look at the pictures, connected with our lesson and say what we are going to talk about

T.-Have you ever stayed in a hotel?

Did you like it?

What kind of a hotel was it?

Did you know all the rules of behavior there?

Would you like to learn them?

Would you like to learn to be a good customer?

Let's start from the very beginning- learning the active vocabulary

I.Vocabulary drills:

A receptionist, a hotel clerk, to book a room, a porter, to check in (out), to vacate the room, a single, double room, a chambermaid, reservation, to confirm, a letter of confirmation, a vacant room, the hotel is full, to sign, to get the bill ready, a suite, a bellboy, a key, a lobby

  1. Look through the new vocabulary and group it into 2 groups-which you already know and not;

  2. Read aloud the words you already know and give the Ukrainian translation;

  3. Try and understand the meanings of the unknown words from the explanations, the context:

Receptionist-a hotel clerk whose job is to meet the new-comers and register them;

Chambermaid- a woman whose work is to clean the rooms and see if everything is OK in the corridors;

Suite- a hotel room with the highest possible comfort and conveniences;

Bellboy- a person at the disposal of the guests (showing the way to the rooms, helping in some situations);

Porter- а man who brings the baggage of the guests to their rooms.

  1. Make up sentences of your own with the new vocabulary units.

II. Group work

Read the dialogues, make your own ones according to the model and act them out

#1- Receptionist: " Southern Star" Hotel. Good morning.

-Thomas: Hello. My name is Thomas Miller.

-R. Yes. How can I help you?

-T. Last week I booked a room from the 5th to the 6th of November, and confirmed the reservation by fax.

-R. Oh, yes. Mister Miller. I remember.

-T. I’d like to book a single room for a colleague, for the 6th of November.

-R. Let me see. Oh, I'm very sorry, Mr. Miller, but the hotel is full on the 6th of November because of the conference, you see.

-T. Oh, it’s a pity.

-R. You could try other hotels in the city.

-T. Yes, I’ll do that. Thank you for your help.

-R. We look forward to seeing you on the 5th of November, Mr. Miller. Goodbye.

#2- Hello. Can I help you?

-Hello. We need a double room for three nights.- Yes, we have two double rooms on the 11th and 15th floor, facing the yard. Which would you prefer?

- Its all the same with me. May be, my wife would like to choose. What do you think, darling?

- 11th sounds okay with me, if you don’t mind.

- Sure. Then let it be on the 11th floor.

- All right. Will you, please, fill out these forms?

- Certainly.

- How long are you going to stay here?

- About a week or so.

- Fine, The bellboy will show you to your room. Here are the keys. Don’t worry about the suit-cases. Leave them in the lobby. The porter will help with the luggage.

III. Pair work. Answer the receptionist’s questions:

1.Will this room suit you?

2. Will you have lunch just now or would you like to have some rest first?

3. May I ask you, sir, how many days are you planning to stay with us?

4. Would you like your meals served in your room or would you rather come to the restaurant?

5. Have you rung, sir?

6. I'm afraid, we are packed full. Will a room without a shower and telephone be all right?

IV. Match the parts of the sentences:

1.- Так, я послав телеграму з Києва з проханням зарезервувати мені номер з 12 вересня. Ось лист-підтвердження.

2.- Так, усе гаразд. Заповніть, будь ласка, форму.

1.- Я розраховую пробути у вашому готелі тиждень. Ви не будете заперечувати, якщо я оплачу рахунок, коли буду виписуватися?

Developing and educational objectives: to train the memory of pupils, to teach them to make conclusions, to self-evaluate, to develop their feeling of language, to widen their horizons, to systemize and generalize the learned grammar material, to bring love to music

Lesson equipment: grammar tables, pupils’ textbooks, additional text for listening comprehension, self-evaluation cards for pupils

What kind of a hotel would you like to stay at?

What do you think of unusual hotels like made of ice or a former prison?

Present your dialogues .We shall listen attentively and decide whose dialogue is the best. Be ready to ask questions if you are interested in something.

VII. Language practice.

We are going to learn a song with our grammar material. After singing it we have to find pairs of words in Simple Present and make up our own ones.

Let's prolong the song. Make up your own sentences about your regular actions and your friend's ones. Mind the melody.

VII. Listening comprehension

Pre-listening activities

We are going to listen to the text "A forgetful tourist"

a. Guess what the text will be about.

b. Learn the meanings of the new words:

Safely- with no problems, no accident

Sights- interesting places in a city, places of interest

Extraordinary- unusual; not typical

Intend- to want, to have a desire

After listening to the text you have to

A Forgetful Tourist

Once a tourist arrived in London. When he got off the train, he asked the porter to show him the way to the nearest post-office. He sent a telegram to his wife, informing her that he had arrived safely and giving her the address of the hotel he intended to stay.

Then he went to the hotel, left the luggage there and went for a walk. As it was his first visit to the English capital, he was very much interested to see the museums and the sights of this beautiful city.

He walked about a bit, had dinner at a small restaurant and looked at the shops. When he felt tired and wanted to turn his steps back to the hotel he suddenly realized that he didn't remember its name or even what street it was in.

Suddenly he remembered the telegram which he had sent to his wife on his arrival. She knew his address and could help him.

So at a late hour his wife received this extraordinary telegram: "Please send me my address at once."

Say which sentences are true and which are false

1. A tourist came to London by bus.

2. On his arrival he asked the porter to bring his luggage to the post-office.

3. In his telegram to his wife he gave the address of the hotel he was staying in.

4. He went for a walk after leaving the luggage in the hotel.

5. It was his first visit to London but he didn’t want to see the sights.

7. He decided to come back to the hotel because of hunger.

8. He knew the address but couldn’t find the hotel.

9. He sent a telegram to his wife asking to send him his address.

10, There was nothing strange in his telegram.

Retell the text in Simple Present as if this happens to the tourist every time he comes to London.

Learning objectives: to enrich the vocabulary of the pupils, to develop creative abilities of the pupils, to teach them reading texts with getting the necessary information, to develop the listening skills of the pupils, to teach pupils to render the text, to make a plan to the text, to practice using the construction "I would like to…"

Developing and educational objectives: to teach pupils to distribute the time at the lesson carefully, to develop their skills of working with the map, to broaden the outlook, to promote active way of life, love to the nature

Lesson equipment: a map of the UK, pictures with views of the UK, pictures of sports, an additional text for reading, a tape with the text

Lesson procedure

I.Warming up.

Children, imagine that we have a time machine and we can travel.

What country would you like to travel to? What sights would you like to see? What kind of a hotel would you like to stay at?

II. Working on the text.

1.Learn the new vocabulary:

Originally-at first, at the beginning

Provide- give possibility to do smth

Lounge- a room to have some rest

Tremendous-great, unforgettable

2.Listen to the tape recording of the text

3. Look at the map of the UK.

Find Wales on it.

What kind of landscape does it have?

It has many mountains, doesn’t it?

4. Read the text and do the tasks on it:

Mountain View Holiday Centre

Mountain View Holiday Centre is situated in the beautiful scenery of Wales. Mountain View House was originally the country home of Lord Langdale, but now it has been converted into one of the best holiday centres for young people in Britain.

The House itself has twenty double bedrooms and five single bedrooms. There are bathrooms and toilets on the ground floor and on the first floor. There are two kitchens, two dining rooms, a large lounge and a games room.

There is something at Mountain View for everyone. We have facilities for athletics and playing tennis, football, cricket, volleyball and basketball. The lake provides fishing, swimming, windsurfing, sailing and canoeing. You can go walking or climbing in the mountains. And when the weather is bad, you can play table-tennis and billiards indoors, or go shopping in the town. In the evenings there is a disco.

Whatever your interests-from rock climbing to watching TV- Mountain View is the holiday centre for you. But don’t take our word for it. Read what our guests say:

III. Translating practice.

Pre-reading activities:

You have an abstract from the text, written by a teacher who has visited the USA and stayed at a hotel. We shall train in translating it according to the tips:

  1. Look through the text and divide it into parts.

  2. What part seems the most interesting for you?

  3. Make a plan to the text.

  4. Find the new words in the vocabulary.

  5. Make a draft of your translation.

  6. Look it through again and try to correct the mistakes if any.

Наш номер на шостому поверсі коштував для трьох осіб $319 за добу. Оскільки на вулиці була неймовірна спека, до того ж, з високим рівнем вологості повітря, у номері працював кондиціонер, завдяки якому температуру можна було регулювати до бажаної. У ванній кімнаті все сяяло білизною та чистотою. Покоївка щодня приносила кожному мешканцю по чотири чистих рушники, міняла туалетний папір, серветки, виставляла нові мило, шампунь для волосся,бальзам для тіла а та шапочку для купання. Щоранку під двері апартаментів клали свіжий номер найпоширенішої у США газети "USА Тоdау". На кожному поверсі знаходилися кімнати автоматами для продажу напоїв, солодощів та цигарок. В одному з приміщень на дев'ятому поверсі стояли пральні автомати , де за один долар можна було випрати та висушити одяг. Із шостої години ранку відкривалася тренажерна зала, де майже всі тренажери було обладнано електронікою. Із зали сходами можна спуститися до басейну, який працював до 10-ї вечора. Зазвичай тут плавали діти, дорослі приходили зранку або після дев'ятої вечора. Поруч з басейном було традиційне американське джакузі — круглий басейн для 3 — 4 осіб із гарячою водою, що постійно бурлила. Після п'яти хвилин у джакузі людина почуває себе розслабленою та заспокоєною. З приміщення басейну можна зайти на кілька хвилин до сауни, а потім відпочивати на кушетках та в кріслах, які стояли біля басейну серед квітів та іншої зелені.
