An outstanding event in the history of Ukraine
There are such events in the history of any country that are kept deep in the memory of people, but there are such that are quite fresh in the memory.

The event I am going to speak about refers to the latters.

Ukraine has a long history, which reflects different stages of its historical development, numerous periods of its prosperity and decay.

For long periods our country lived under the yoke of neighboring states, Russia, Poland, Lithuania and them.

The country was disintegrated. Its western part belonged to Poland while the East of the country formed part of Russia.

The Ukrainian nation was dissociated for centuries.

It was only after the Second World War that the Ukrainian people were united in one territorial unity. It was included into the former USSR under the name of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

In 1985 there started the so-called “perestroika” aimed at moving the country out of economic stagnation.

But the programme of reforms was a failure and the Republics longed for their independence.

On the 16th of July 1990 the Supreme Soviet of Ukrainian adopted ”The Declaration of the State Sovereignty of Ukraine”.

After the putsch of 1991 Ukraine was the first to proclaim its independence and complete sovereignty.

On the 24th of August the “Act of the Independence of Ukraine” was adopted.

It said that following the right of self-determination and realizing the Declaration of state sovereignty Ukraine was proclaimed independent.

It was a document of a great historical importance.

This historical decision was approved by the all-round-Ukrainian referendum which was held on the 1st of December 1991. the Ukrainian people confirmed their wish to live in the sovereign and independent country-Ukraine.

So our country has obtained independence.
